The battle to liberate communities in parts
of the North-East from the hands of insurgents that have terrorised the
people for years is being won by the security forces, so says the
Nigerian Army.
In Adamawa State, the army is establishing a new formation in an area that had witnessed several killings by insurgents.
The 23rd Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army has asserted that as a result of the high rate of insurgency in the Northern Senatorial District of Adamawa State, a full-fledged Army formation has been approved by the Nigerian Army authorities for the area. Right now, a new army barracks is being constructed in Mubi.
The Battalion Commander that has been leading the forces fighting the insurgents in the area is Lt. Col Beyide Markus Martins. Col. Martins, who is also Commander, Special Operations, noted while conducting newsmen round the area that the establishment of the Army formation in Mubi was because of realisation of the strategic location of Mubi, a town bordering the Cameroun Republic, as well as the high rate of insurgency in the area.
According to him, the new Army formation would help in checkmating insurgents from crossing into the hinterland. He said the recent operations conducted since a state of emergency was imposed on the area had yielded some fruitful results.
“The Army high command sees Mubi as a strategic town, being a border town with Cameron and Chad Republics which makes it favourable for our operation,” he declared.
The commander, however, informed that the Nigerian-Cameroon borders are presently secured and safe as a result of the presence of the military in Mubi and its environs.
Col Martins maintained that a lot of the fleeing insurgents from Borno State have been arrested in Madagali and other border towns in the area.
He informed, however, that the successes recorded in the area were not without the cooperation and support of the leadership of Mubi Local Government council, the opinion leaders, vigilante groups and the entire people for the show of solidarity to the Joint Military Task Force based in Mubi. He stressed that the success so far achieved by the military would not have been possible without their support.
According to him, the good rapport between the civilian populace and the army played a significant role in the quest to restore normalcy to the area. He described the cooperation of other sister security agencies as laudable.
Lt. Colonel Beyidi Martins also paraded five suspected insurgents, who allegedly raided the Mubi International Market Bureau de Change, carting away several millions of naira in local and foreign currencies before their arrest.
The recovered amount was later presented to the chairman of the Bureau De Change in the market, Alhaji Shuaibu Nuru by Col. Martins.
The army chief also spoke on the killing of two major Boko Haram suspects – Zakara Yau and Muhammadu Bama – on whose heads a ransom of N10million was placed by the federal government. Both met their waterloo during an encounter with the soldiers.
According to the battalion commander, the two were on their way to Wukari in Taraba State for an operation. The JTF had monitored them from their base in Borno State. They were nabbed and eliminated in Mubi, Adamawa State. A number of JTF soldiers also got ammunition.
Col Martins also paraded five suspected members of Boko Haram arrested by the soldiers. He said some others were being investigated and interrogated by the battalion for the authenticity and the level of involvement in insurgency in Adamawa State.
The battalion commander also disclosed that those paraded yesterday were arrested last week when they attacked the Bureau De Change in Mubi and carted away millions in both Nigerian and foreign currencies.
Some of the money recovered by the JTF was yesterday given to the chairman of the Bureau De Change in Mubi, shortly after parading the suspects who were said to have been armed with assorted guns.
Items recovered by the JTF included 485 live ammunitions, 28 magazines, Dane guns, bows and arrows, axes, cutlasses and rocket propellers, among other dangerous weapons.
Lt. Col. Martins commended the people of Mubi for their cooperation and support, saying without them, the achievements recorded by JTF could not have been made. He appealed to residents of the state to continue to cooperate with the task force.
